Assisted Independence & Residential Services (AIRS)

We have found that we work best with individuals who wish to grow and learn. Therefore, we are not able to work with people who are only interested in having care done for them but rather, we enjoy working with individuals who wish to continue to grow and learn.

AIRS distinguishes itself in providing a small, individualized service led by professionals. This means that individuals seeking services will receive quick answers and will not be put on a waiting list to await “placement” as long as the funding and suitable roommates are available to you.

Policy

The following criteria would allow the individual to apply for services with AIRS.

In keeping with AIRS’ philosophy for individualized home support; we strive to ensure that each individual’s home is operated on a least-restrictive as possible model; therefore we will not support individuals who require:

    • Extreme modifications to personal environment that would adversely affect other individuals in residence.
    • A more institutional approach
    • Acute medical needs

AIRS does not employ medical personnel; for that reasons we cannot adequately offer supports required for individuals with acute medical needs (i.e.: oxygen therapy, home IV therapy etc).

Procedure

An individual may apply either by:

    • Self-referral
    • Referral by another person (i.e. Guardian, Social Worker, PDD Designate, family member, friend or by another agency

Funding

Individuals must have qualified for AISH (Assured Income for the Severely Handicapped), or its equivalent, and have approval in place prior to receiving our services and they must also have approval for funding from Persons with Developmental Disabilities (PDD).

Personal Support Funding

AIRS supports the principle of Personal Support Funding (also known as Individual Funding).

Also available is contract funding which is directly sent to the agency in advance. AIRS presently has contract funding for Supported Independent Living.

The majority of the individuals we work for enjoy Personal Support or Individual Funding and AIRS provides such staffing to individuals with developmental disabilities.

This model means that the individual has the choice as to where and with whom they will live. This decision must be mutual between the individual and your house mates as each individual possess the same right. As in any situation where roommates live together, each person has “one vote”. The decision as to which combination of individuals live best together, and who will be invited to stay is based on the majority preference, combined with input from the service provider.

Essentially, AIRS is under the individual’s contract. We will provide the home and the furnishings. You lease your room from the home owners.  You may bring your own furniture or we will assist you in securing a bed, dresser and chair for your room.

In the event that the individual is dissatisfied with our service and if attempts to reconcile the difficulties prove fruitless, the individual is free to choose another service provider from whom to purchase service. The decision regarding funding and changing service providers rests with PDD.

Intake Process

After talking to the Director, a preliminary intake package will be offered to the individual / family member. Once completed, it can be returned to AIRS.

This package is then reviewed by the management team and we determine if we are the right agency to provide supports. If we feel that we are, we will set up a face to face meeting to discuss the intake. If we feel that we can not provide the required services for the individual, we will both call you and send you a letter explaining our decision.

In any situation where AIRS finds that information given upon intake is false and/or information is withheld, our consideration of providing service or service itself will be immediately discontinued. This failure to provide information and can seriously compromise your safety and the safety of your staff and others.
